German Whispers Sudoku

Along a green line, neighbouring digits must differ by at least 5 — forcing the values to zig-zag between low and high.

German Whispers Sudoku draws green lines across the grid, and along each one there is a single rule: any two neighbouring digits must differ by at least 5. That large gap forces the values to lurch violently between low and high, and it produces one of the most useful side-effects in all of variant Sudoku — a digit that can never appear on the line at all.

The rule: a gap of five or more

Walk along a German Whispers line one step at a time. Each pair of adjacent cells must be at least 5 apart: a 1 can sit next to a 6, 7, 8 or 9, and a 2 next to a 7, 8 or 9. The line below reads 1-7-2-9-3-8, and every neighbouring pair clears the gap of 5 (1→7 is 6, 7→2 is 5, 2→9 is 7, and so on).

Why 5 can never appear

Here is the trick that cracks these puzzles. For a digit to sit on a whisper line it needs a neighbour at least 5 away. A 5 would need a neighbour of 0 or lower, or 10 or higher — neither exists on a 1–9 grid. So 5 is banned from every German Whispers line. That leaves two camps: the low digits 1–4 and the high digits 6–9. Since neighbours must be 5 apart, the line is forced to alternate — low, high, low, high — because two lows (or two highs) can never be far enough apart.

The pairs that actually fit

Not every low–high pairing clears the gap. Running through them: a 1 pairs with 6, 7, 8 or 9; a 2 with 7, 8 or 9; a 3 with only 8 or 9; and a 4 with 9 alone. That last one is the sharpest clue on the board — a 4 anywhere on a whisper line forces every neighbour to be 9, and a 9 next to it forces the other side back down to a 4. The extremes of the line are where a German Whispers puzzle usually falls apart in your favour.

A worked example, step by step

Step 1 — the 4 forces a 9. Its neighbour must differ by at least 5. From a 4 that means 9 or higher — and only 9 exists. So the next cell is a 9.

Step 2 — the 9 forces a 4. Now the 9 needs a neighbour 5 away, which means 4 or lower — and, since 5 is banned and the line alternates, that swings it back toward the low digits. The line zig-zags 4-9-4-9…, each cell forced by the last.

Solving strategy

  • Delete every 5 from the line first. It is the single biggest elimination and it is free.
  • Colour low and high. Mark the alternation; once one cell is known low or high, the whole line's parity follows.
  • Hunt the 4s and 9s. A 4 forces 9s beside it and vice versa — these rigid pairs unlock the rest.
  • Feed the grid. Each forced digit behaves like a given for its row, column and box.

Common mistakes

  • Putting a 5 on the line. It is impossible — no digit is 5 away from a 5 within 1–9.
  • Two lows or two highs in a row. Adjacent cells must cross the gap, so the line always alternates; it can never step low-to-low.
  • Forgetting the tight pairs. A 4 only whispers to a 9, and a 3 only to 8 or 9 — treat those as near-givens.
  • Confusing it with Dutch Whispers. The Dutch cousin uses a gap of 4, which does allow a 5; the German version bans it.
