What is Yin-Yang?

  • All cells of each colour must form one connected group (joined edge to edge).

What Yin-Yang looks like

In Yin-Yang you shade every cell one of two colours. Two rules govern the shading: each colour must form a single connected group, and no 2×2 block may be all one colour. Below is a small solved grid - dark and light each hang together, and no four-square is a single shade.

The dark cells form one connected group and the light cells another, and no 2×2 square is a single colour - the two constraints that make every step a forced deduction.

That is Sudoku-grade logic in two colours. There are no digits and no boxes, but the way a placement ripples outward is the same: shade one cell and the connectivity and no-2×2 rules immediately force several neighbours, just as a placed digit forces its row, column and box.

What Yin-Yang shares with Sudoku

  • It is a pure-logic, single-solution puzzle solved by deduction, with no guessing in a well-made grid.
  • Forced cells cascade: once a shade is fixed, the connectivity and 2×2 rules dictate its neighbours, exactly as a Sudoku placement forces its unit.
  • The no-2×2 rule is a forbidden pattern, the same style of reasoning as avoiding a deadly rectangle in Sudoku uniqueness.

How Yin-Yang differs from Sudoku

  • Cells are binary (two colours), not one of nine digits.
  • Its constraints are global connectivity plus a local 2×2 rule - there is no row, column or box to satisfy.
  • You shade regions rather than place symbols, so there is no counting or Latin-square structure at all.

Do Sudoku skills transfer?

The mindset that carries over is pattern-avoidance deduction: “if I shade this cell that colour, it completes a forbidden 2×2 (or cuts a region in two), so it must be the other” is the same reasoning as ruling out a placement because it would create a Sudoku deadly pattern.

The verdict

Yin-Yang is a two-colour deductive cousin: the same guess-free logic as Sudoku, driven by connectivity and a no-2×2 rule instead of the Latin-square constraint.


Where to play it

If it was Sudoku you came for, the level is the choice that matters more than the variant - Yin-Yang and Sudoku part ways on the rules, but a Sudoku grid can be a two-minute warm-up or an hour of work depending on nothing but how much of it you are given.

Difficulty and type are two separate dials here: the type sets the extra rule, the level sets how much of the grid you start with. Easy Sudoku leaves 36 of the 81 cells filled, so there is always an obvious next move somewhere; Evil Sudoku leaves 23, with no easy moves at all. Take it at the gentler end while the pattern is still new, and move up once it stops being a fight.
