What is Minesweeper?

A grid hiding mines, where every revealed number tells you exactly how many mines sit in the (up to eight) cells touching it — you deduce which hidden cells are safe and which are mined. Here are the rules in full:

  • Some cells hide mines; the rest are safe. A revealed safe cell shows a number — how many of its up-to-eight neighbours are mines (a blank means zero).
  • Using those counts, you deduce which covered cells must be mines and which are certainly safe, and open the safe ones.
  • A well-posed logic Minesweeper is solvable by pure deduction from the numbers, without ever guessing.

What Minesweeper looks like

In Minesweeper every revealed cell shows a number: how many of the up-to-eight cells touching it hide a mine. A blank means none. From those counts you deduce which covered cells are safe and which are mined — pure logic, no clicking and hoping.

Three cells read “1”, each counting a single mine among its neighbours. The only cell all three can be counting is the top-right — so it must hold the mine (dark). Every other covered cell is provably safe.

That deduction — “this clue's count is already met, so everything else it touches is settled” — is the very move you make in Sudoku when a box already contains a digit and you rule it out of the rest. Minesweeper just does it with mines and safe cells instead of nine digits.

What Minesweeper shares with Sudoku

  • Both are solved by constraint satisfaction: a number is a promise about its neighbourhood, exactly as a Sudoku clue constrains its row, column and box.
  • The key move is the same — find a unit whose count is already met, so every other candidate in it is forced (a mine, or in Sudoku, not the digit).
  • A fair puzzle of either kind has a single solution reachable by logic alone; guessing is a failure of method, not part of it.

How Minesweeper differs from Sudoku

  • Minesweeper is binary — each cell is mine or safe — while a Sudoku cell takes one of nine digits.
  • Its clues count an overlapping 3×3 neighbourhood, not a fixed row, column or box, so the regions shift with every cell.
  • The famous computer version adds a guessing element from the opening click; the pure logic puzzle (and Sudoku) never does.

Do Sudoku skills transfer?

The instinct you sharpen in Sudoku — "this unit's requirement is already satisfied, so everything else in it is settled" — is the whole of Minesweeper. Counting how a clue interacts with what is already placed is the same reasoning as crosshatching a digit through a box.
