- An n×n grid is filled, classically with 1 to n², each used once.
- Every row, every column and both main diagonals must sum to the same magic constant.
- For 1-n² that constant is n(n²+1)/2 - for the 3×3 square, 15.

The best-known magic square fills a 3×3 grid with 1 to 9 so that every row, every column and both diagonals add up to the same total - the magic constant 15.

The equal-line-sum idea echoes both the diagonals of X-Sudoku and the cage sums of Killer. But unlike Sudoku, the numbers 1-9 are used once across the whole grid, not once per line - and the 3×3 square is essentially unique, a single construction rather than a puzzle with endless instances.
What Magic Square shares with Sudoku

If it was Sudoku you came for, the level is the choice that matters more than the variant - Magic Square and Sudoku part ways on the rules, but a Sudoku grid can be a two-minute warm-up or an hour of work depending on nothing but how much of it you are given.
Difficulty and type are two separate dials here: the type sets the extra rule, the level sets how much of the grid you start with. Easy Sudoku leaves 36 of the 81 cells filled, so there is always an obvious next move somewhere; Evil Sudoku leaves 23, with no easy moves at all.
