What is Latin Square?

What a Latin square looks like

Every row and every column holds 1–4 exactly once — and nothing else is required. Add the 3×3-box rule and stretch it to 9×9, and this is precisely Sudoku.
Because Sudoku already is a Latin square, every scanning habit you have carries over completely — you are just solving without the extra leverage the boxes normally give you. The one thing to remember: a bare Latin square usually has many valid completions, so a good puzzle version pins down its givens carefully, exactly as Sudoku does to guarantee a single answer.
