Is Sudoku Good for Your Brain?

Short, honest answer: Sudoku genuinely exercises several thinking skills, and research links regular puzzle-solving with better cognitive performance — but it is not a proven shield against ageing or dementia. Plenty of sites overclaim in both directions. Here's what the evidence actually supports.

What Sudoku really trains

Solving a Sudoku is a workout for a specific set of mental muscles:

  • Working memory — holding "this cell can be 3 or 8, and that one depends on it" in your head while you test a line of reasoning.
  • Logical deduction — every placement is an if-then argument; harder grids chain many of them, up to full forcing chains.
  • Pattern recognition — with practice, structures like the naked pair or X-Wing stop being searched for and start being seen. That shift is real, learned skill.
  • Sustained attention — a Hard grid is 20+ minutes of focus with no external rewards, a rarity in a notification-filled day.

One useful clarification: despite the digits, Sudoku involves no arithmetic — the numbers are just nine convenient symbols. (Its cousin Killer Sudoku is the one that adds actual sums.)

What the research says

The largest relevant dataset comes from the PROTECT study, led by the University of Exeter and King's College London and published in 2019 in the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry. Researchers analysed over 19,000 adults aged 50 to 93 and found that people who did number puzzles like Sudoku more frequently scored better on tests of reasoning, attention, working memory and information processing. On problem-solving measures, frequent puzzlers performed on par with people about eight years younger on average (University of Exeter, 2019).

That's an encouraging result — and it comes with an equally important caveat.

The honest caveat: correlation, not proof

The PROTECT findings are observational: they show that regular puzzlers have sharper scores, not that puzzles caused them. People with sharper minds may simply be more drawn to puzzles. Controlled trials of "brain training" more broadly tend to find that practising a task makes you better mostly at that task and close relatives of it, with limited transfer to everything else. So the fair summary is:

  • Sudoku reliably makes you better at the skills Sudoku uses — deduction, scanning, candidate bookkeeping.
  • Regular puzzle habits are associated with better cognitive performance in later life.
  • No puzzle, Sudoku included, is proven to prevent cognitive decline or dementia — anyone claiming that is ahead of the science.

Why it's still a genuinely good habit

Even under the strictest reading of the evidence, Sudoku holds up well as a daily mental habit:

  • It replaces passive scrolling with active reasoning. Ten minutes of deduction engages you in a way ten minutes of feed-reading doesn't.
  • It's calming. A grid has clear rules, no time pressure unless you want it, and a guaranteed logical solution — a tidy antidote to open-ended daily stress.
  • Difficulty scales with you. From first naked singles to Evil-tier chains, there is always a next rung, which is exactly what keeps a mental habit engaging instead of automatic.
  • It's a keystone habit. A daily challenge takes minutes, and small daily wins are easier to sustain than grand resolutions.

How to get the most brain benefit from it
